The shooting followed a felony domestic incident involving a weapon in Richland Township, State Trooper Steve Limani told members of the media around 6 p.m.
The man fled local police as they attempted to arrest him, leading them on a high-speed chase, "putting the community in danger," Limani said, adding that state troopers in the area observed the chase and jumped into action, taking over the pursuit.

The man attempted to turn into the eastbound lanes, so a state trooper did a "pit-maneuver" to stop him, pinning him to the jersey barrier.
He refused to comply with commands, so officers opened fire, using "lethal force," Limani said.
The coroner was called sometime before 4 p.m., according to Limani and dispatchers.
It is unclear if other forces were used first, such as a TASER device, and it is not known if the man fired back at police, although no injuries were reported.
The Westmoreland County district attorney's office is involved in the investigation.
US 22 was closed in the westbound lanes from New Derry Road and Latrobe New Alexandria Road in Dery Township, according to PennDOT.
State police were on the scene and urged drivers to find alternative routes.
The roadway reopened around 7 p.m.
